On October 31, Ocean Viking leaves Ravenna.

On November 2, while navigating towards Syracuse for portcall, ITMRCC instructed Ocean Viking to proceed to a distress case in the Italian Search and Rescue Region, in the Ionian Sea. 75 shipwrecked persons were rescued from a overcrowded sailing boat, adrift. Taranto was assigned as place of safety.

All 75 survivors disembark in Taranto on November 4.

07:20 Ocean Viking leaves the port of Ravenna.

November 2, 2023

13:37 Whilst in the Italian SRR in position 38 41.9 (N) 017 18.7 (E), Ocean Viking receives a call on her bridge satellite phone from Italian MRCC alerting of a sailing vessel in distress and requesting Ocean Viking to assist on the rescue of the persons in distress.
13:49 Ocean Viking contacts ITMRCC via satellite phone to inform of best Estimated Time of Arrival to the distress case’s last known position set at 23h00 UTC.
14:01 Ocean Viking (in position 38 38.7 (N) 017 18.8 (E)) contacts ITMRCC via email to report in writing on information transmitted via satellite phone.
16:18 Ocean Viking (in position 38 21.5 (N) 017 42.3 (E)) contacts ITMRCC via satellite phone to ask for an update on the distress case. ITMRCC informs that the merchant vessel Edzar Circksena is currently on scene and will remain with the distress case until Ocean Viking arrives to conduct the rescue.
20:28 Edzar Circksena contacts Ocean Viking via VHF Ch. 16 to report on the distress case. EdzarCircksena reports persons on board distress case have no life jackets, and reports presence of women on board. There is a reasonable certainty that the persons on board the case boat are threatened by grave and imminent danger of being lost at sea and require immediate assistance.
21:03 Ocean Viking emails ITMRCC to update on the situation and report back information received from Edzar Circksena.
21:26 Ocean Viking contacts ITMRCC via satellite phone to update on the situation and to inform Ocean Viking is ready to launch the RHIBs to proceed with the rescue of the distresscase. ITMRCC asks Ocean Viking to request Edzar Circksena to contact ITMRCC via satellite phone.
21:43 Ocean Viking in position 37 48.1 (N) 018 35.8 (E) is 1.3 NM from distress case. Ocean Viking RHIBs arebeing launched to recover the persons in distress.
21:53 Edzar Circksena contacts Ocean Viking on VHF to inform they are leaving the scene and resuming their course.
22:10 Ocean Viking RHIBs are with the distress case and start distribution of life jackets to persons in distress.
22:30 Ocean Viking starts evacuation of the people in distress from the sailing vessel to Ocean Viking.
